Professor Lupus” Podcast Group 8 feedback- Sharon Abboa-Offei
1. Pathophysiology and its relationship to the symptoms, diagnostic evaluation and treatment in your words (15 marks) (350 – 400 words)
Explain in your own words the relationship between the pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnostic evaluation and treatment as explained in the assigned video/podcast.
The podcast describes the pathophysiology of SLE as an autoimmune process where the body’s immune system attacks its tissues. This exaggerated immune response targets healthy cells and organs, causing widespread inflammation and damage. Symptoms vary widely and can be unpredictable, which adds to the challenges in diagnosis and management. Skin rash, butterfly rash to the face, kidney dysfunction, arthritis, edema to the lower legs, neurological disorders such as seizures, and or psychosis are some symptoms. The ANA (antinuclear antibody) test, which often shows positive results in SLE, is the diagnostic evaluation of choice in the podcast. There is no treatment for SLE. Treatment focuses on reducing pain and inflammation, symptom management and lifestyle modifications.
2. Gaps in content (5 marks). (250-300 words)
During your efforts to comprehend the interconnections among various facets of the assigned condition, were there any noticeable gaps in the content or potential additions that could have been included to enhance your understanding of the topic?
At timestamp 7:50-8:08, when Rose described feelings of uncertainty about her diagnosis, it would have been great if the group had included some pertinent nursing strategies to support her transition. For example, the nurse can apply an empathetic approach by validating her feelings and linking Rose to mental health resources.
3. One teaching-learning strategy that supported or hindered your learning and why (5 marks). (250-300 words)
Describe one teaching-learning strategy implemented by your peers that supported or hindered your learning. Provide a rationale for your response (5 marks).
The presentation focused on auditory learning styles, which can be limiting for people with different learning styles. Also, SLE is a complex condition with symptoms like the butterfly rash and complex immunological processes that are easier to understand through images, diagrams, and charts. Podcasts, being audio-only, cannot show these visuals, which may hinder understanding of symptoms, pathology, or diagnostic procedures.
4. ONE change that you recommend and why (5 marks). (250-300 words)
If you had an opportunity to make ONE change to the assigned video to further improve its content and/or creativity, what change would you propose?
A visual aid would reinforce learning, especially for complex information that is harder to retain through audio alone. It also allows listeners to review and reference critical points later, supporting better understanding and application in clinical practice and personal learning.
5. One example of content integration into your practice (15 marks) (350 – 400 words)
Provide an example of how you would integrate the information that you learned from the assigned video into your future practice.
I would integrate the information learned from the podcast to improve my communication with SLE patients about symptom management and lifestyle adaptations. The video indicated that there was no cure, so my education would focus on pain and inflammation management with NSAIDs, aspirin and naproxen. I would also support my patients in developing and adhering to self-management plans, including non-pharmacological interventions such as a healthy diet, mental health therapy, exercise, and social support and engagement.
